Octobre 2002 - Abril 2003
October 13-14 2002: Austin --> Comstock --> Presidio, Texas
Odometer: 11,494
Mileage in the USA: 3,624
Texas weather was unexpected. Clear and warm all the way to Austin and hot the whole time we were there. On departure from Macks, the temperature stayed below 60 degrees all the way to Comstock, which is very close to the Mexican border. We stayed in the only motel in town, er, burg...crossroads. As we left Comstock, the temperature was hovering between low 50's and 65 all with the dreaded cloud cover.
Texas is flat....all the way until you hit the frontier land. As we approached the Big Bend National Park area, the scenary and road geography definitely got a little more interesting. They used what amounts to a very hard tarmac seal embedded with gravel for roadway. Not good on tire life, but from the State DOT perspective, great for maintenance.
Texas is friggin big! It's been three days of travel for ~900 miles and we are finally ready to leave the USA for Mexico!
Even with the cloud cover over the western part of Texas for most of our last two days, the scenary has been fantastic. Fortunately, as we approached the park, the sun broke through offering beautiful vistas and indescribeable bigness. Texas is BIG!
We're doing ok so far. My rear tire is looking pretty bad and I hope it lasts until Panama. I've decided that if it keeps getting worse by the time we reach Mazatlan, I will be on the phone to an Mexico City moto-dealership for a cheap as possible rear tire.
