Day Six - Seven: New Orleans, Louisiana
Odometer: Unchanged
Our first evening in New Orleans taught us nothing whatsoever about temptation and a place to spend your money. What should have been an easy evening became an exercise in practiced debauchery and filthy alcohol consumption. Top that off with the various strip clubs Hugh and I commandeered and you get a picture of spend-thrift mayhem worthy of any trip to this wallet sponge of a city.
But we did have a great time though ;)
Too damned great in fact! I recall walking back to the hotel with Hugh, but according to Craig, Hugh walked in about 40 minutes later. He got lost...?
Anyway we had an 11am checkout and we needed a 3pm checkout. We tossed everything into our bags and proceeded to load the bikes in the pouring rain and ride them away from hell.
I'll come back someday, but not soon. New Orleans is just to cool!
Odometer: 10,479
On our way to Houston from New Orleans and Hugh and I can't take it anymore. We find a rest area and get an hour of rest. Craig too is suffering some physical pains in his shoulder and kidney again.
Surprisingly, it wasn't hard to get that much needed rest on steal picnic tables and benches ;)
Once we woke, Craig announced he would trail us to Austin, TX and then he would bail out for home. Neither Hugh or I said anything as we figured that once off the droning highways of I-10 and into the Texas Hill Country, he may change his mind. But that didn't happen.
Instead, we found accommodations in Beaumont, TX and Craig took his own room. I imagine he wanted a little reflection time. No specific details here, but I believe that whatever is going on in his personal life may be overwhelming his physical self and he has finally come to dealing with it.
For my part, I am really disappointed. The three of us have been planning a SIX month long trip together for more that a year and a half and suddenly, all the planning, time and money spent is being brushed aside by one of us. I just hope Craig does not ever regret the decision.
As for Hugh and I, we continue. It is now just seven days. The routine of travel has not quite set in yet, but I figure within a couple of weeks it will.
We are in Austin tonight as a guest of Macks. Mack is an email correspondant with Hugh from the VFR list. He has been very gracious with allowing us a room and shower and letting us do some needed maintenance to the bikes. I did an oil-change and adjusted the chain and lubed it. Hugh did the same and changed his front and rear tires.
More to come with pics of Austin (hopefully)
